What is Patchwork?
Patchwork is a particular technique for processing leather. Good patchwork is the most economical and environmentally friendly way of production. We explain this to you: in principle, the whole skin is used for the manufacture of an original Chesterfield. This must meet our high quality requirements. Sometimes the quality is good, but small irregularities such as bites or other scars are disturbingly visible. It's a shame to disapprove of the whole skin on that. In that case, our craftsman can choose to cut the skin as optimally as possible and to remove the lesser spots. That's not so simple. It requires insight, expertise and mastery of the right technology. He then selects matching pieces of leather from the good parts for making e.g. a 3-seater Brighton sofa in patchwork. Variations in shape, pattern and color can still be made at this stage. The leather pieces are then stitched together in a special way, after which the leather is carefully folded over the stitching seam so that the seam is no longer visible. This is real quality craftsmanship! The effect is very beautiful. Playful, yet very strong. The applied technique ensures a good distribution of the pressure: not only on the stitched seam, but also on the fold. It gives the leather on the furniture optimum strength and stability and increases the carrying capacity and durable seating comfort, exactly as you would expect from a real Chesterfield! Our Chameleon version is a very creative patchwork concept. Below you can see an example of this.
Is patchwork made from waste leather or residual material?
Sometimes patchwork is condescending in the market. It is then said that it is made from waste hides or residual material and is therefore of lower quality. For Chesterfield.com this story does not hold and the opposite is true. We never use waste hides or residual material for our patchwork. The high quality requirements of our brand "The Chesterfield Brand" and the extensive warranty conditions apply to all our products, including the patchwork.
Is recycled leather also used for Chesterfields?
Due to its high quality standards,Chesterfield.com does not use recycled leather for its products. But what exactly is recycled leather? If the skin itself is of good quality, but small imperfections are visible from bites or other natural damage, the skin can be cut by the craftsman. The good learning parts are retained by this technique for further processing. And the rejected pieces of leather, what happens to them? That differs per producer. At Chesterfield.com, seller of the brand "The Chesterfield Brand", these 'weaker' leather pieces are collected and sold for recycling. The leather is then ground and mixed with other substances. This makes it suitable for reuse. This is good for the environment and prevents unnecessary waste of beautiful, natural material. All kinds of products are made from this recycled leather. Think of belts, handles, accessories, leather labels, bags, etc.
